How Do I Utilize Tibetan Prayer Beads. What Are Malas
Mala is the Sanskrit name for the original prayer beads that are used to count mantra and recitations. All Tibetan Buddhist communities have many malas. They can be hung around wrists, or dangled from the fingers. They are also known as trengwa in Tibetan. It is commonplace for Tibetan Buddhists to recite certain mantras thousands upon thousands of times. It is also possible to use your rosary as a spiritual calculator. Even if the mantra isn't being recited, it can be used to quiet the mind and help focus. A string of 108 beads is the most well-known kind of mala. It can be made out of semi-precious or precious stone or wood, seeds, or even bone. It is believed that you have completed 100 mantras time you move around the mala. To make up any mistakes or miscounts, an additional 8 beads are used to serve as "spare". Additionally, you will find head beadsthat are larger than the others. The head beads are used to make up for any errors or miscounts you make during the course. Malas might have precious stones that are placed at various intervals. For instance the turquoise, coral or. These stones are usually added at intervals that can be used for counting. For example when you have 27 beads you will know you have completed 1/4 of a circuit. Counter beads are added, and your total number of beads will be 111 instead of 108. Also, you can use a smaller mala for prostrations, made up of 27 beads. The smaller size is wrapped around your hand and repeated four times. You can make other combinations (21 or 22 as an example) and there is not a problem so long as your mala is able to count.

Types of Malas
There are numerous kinds of malas, ranging from bone and ivory to lapis-lazuli, sandalwood or crystal or "Bodhi seed" (actually created from Rudraksha seeds) or "lotus seed" (actually made of the seed of rattan). While there are many theories about the type of mala that is best for different types of prayers however, we don't think it's a huge factor. We don't think Tibetans have any distinctions between different types of malas. Monks and nuns will generally utilize simple and affordable malas, like wooden ones. Any mala is acceptable. It is more beneficial to concentrate on the spiritual practice of praying and reciting mantras rather than on the looks or value of your mala. Check out the top rated Bodhi Seed Beads for more.

How To Hold And Count Using Your Malas
As Tibetan culture has shown that there aren't any rigid rules in calculating mantras or malas. Every person does it differently. There are several ways you could do it, but not nearly as important as what you are aiming to pray for. If you are praying with your center and using the mala, then you are doing the right job! Although most sources suggest that you hold your mala in your lefthand but some Tibetans prefer to hold them in their right. You may have the prayer tool in one hand and mala in the second. It is better to hold malas in the left hand, and the prayer tool in your right. Start with the bead closest to the "guru" and then use the mala in the same way you would. Now, hold the mala between the thumb and index fingers. Then, recite your mantra one time at a time, either slowly or loudly. Move on to the next one using a the rolling movement of the thumb. recite your mantra again and repeat. Once you reach the guru beads once more and you've accomplished 100 mantras. There is no need to count every one of them. In this moment, the majority of Tibetans don't pass by the guru bead and instead reverse the direction by turning the mala around and then re-starting a circuit of 100 before returning to where they came from. It's unclear why this is the case. We do it because we're familiar with it.

Caring for your Mala
Your mala will become more sacred as you utilize it to chant mantras, carry it to classes, and then have it blessed, perhaps by your spiritual guru. While it's not in and of itself like a statue or a piece of Buddhist literature, it is something we usually treat with respect. It is not a good idea to throw it away, put it on the floor, or put objects that aren't sacred to it. When not using their malas, Tibetans wear them on their wrists or wear the malas around their necks. (Although it is important to note that they're not worn as necklaces, but rather as a decoration, or for self-promotion, as a way of proving that one is spiritual.) It is best to hang it up high, close to the altar if you don't intend to use it for long or while you sleep. The bookshelf we keep under the altar is where ours is kept. It's all up to you and your desire to handle it with love and respect, all while keeping a practical, non-extreme attitude.
